“We’re gonna win a prize if our team wins!”

One of my boys clenched a worn yellow piece of paper in his fist with all the Articles of Faith printed on it.

Their Activity Days leaders were preparing them for an upcoming activity, and they challenged the boys to memorize all thirteen Articles of Faith.

As a parent, I love when leaders reinforce the teachings we try to make a regular part of our home.

These sweet leaders always have a special way of making it fun for them.

What are the 13 Articles of Faith?

The Articles of Faith are a statement of basic beliefs and doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

They were written by Joseph Smith, Jr. while he was living in Nauvoo, Illinois in 1842.

There are 13 Articles of Faith, each addressing different aspects of the LDS church’s beliefs and practices.

They cover topics such as the nature of God, Jesus Christ, the Atonement, faith and works, salvation, and the role of prophets in revealing God’s will.

Two faith-related pamphlets lying on a light striped surface; the left one is titled "4th article of faith" and the right one is titled "3rd article of faith," each displaying religious text excerpts.

Why did Joseph Smith write the 13 Articles of Faith?

Joseph wrote a letter outlining the basic beliefs and doctrines of the LDS church to John Wentworth, the editor of the Chicago Democrat.

Joseph saw this as an opportunity to clarify some of the misconceptions and criticisms that were being directed towards the church at that time.

He wanted to create a brief summary of the core principles that set the LDS church apart from other Christian denominations.

In addition, Joseph believed that the Articles of Faith could serve as a tool for missionaries to use when explaining their beliefs to those unfamiliar with the church.
