4 Stages of a Butterfly Life Cycle
The butterfly life cycle has four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.
The entire process usually takes between one month and two months, although it can vary depending on the species.
Here’s a closer look at each stage:
Stage 1: The Butterfly Egg
The first stage in a butterfly’s life cycle is the egg.
Eggs are laid on leaves or other surfaces near potential food sources for the caterpillar.
For example, monarch butterfly eggs are often laid on milkweed leaves.
Once hatched, the baby caterpillar will spend its time eating until it goes through metamorphosis and emerges as a butterfly.
Stage 2: The Caterpillar or Larva Stage
The second stage of a butterfly’s life cycle is the larva, or caterpillar.
Caterpillars are the eating machines of the butterfly world and can eat their body weight in leaves every day!
A fully grown caterpillar spends their time eating leaves and growing larger.
Caterpillars eat so much because they are preparing for their next stage, metamorphosis.
During the caterpillar stage, the caterpillar undergoes a process of molting, or shedding its skin.
A caterpillar will molt several times as it grows.
Each time it molts, it grows a new and larger skin.
When they reach their full size, they will spin a cocoon around themselves and enter the pupa stage.
This stage lasts around two weeks.
Stage 3: The Chrysalis or Pupa Stage
The third stage of a butterfly’s life cycle is the pupa, or chrysalis.
During this stage, the caterpillar essentially transforms into a butterfly through a process called metamorphosis.
The pupa is often attached to a leaf or twig by a silken thread.
Inside the pupa, the caterpillar’s body breaks down and reform into that of a butterfly.
This process usually takes around two weeks.
Once the transformation is complete, the butterfly will emerge from the cocoon and begin to mate and lay eggs of its own.
Stage 4: The Adult Butterfly
The fourth and final stage of a butterfly’s life cycle is adulthood, or the adult stage.
Adult butterflies typically live for about two to four weeks, although some species can live for up to a year.
During this time, they will continue the cycle by laying eggs which will hatch into caterpillars and go through the whole process again.
