Free Sunday School Mother’s Day Lessons For Children

Before we start, please be aware and sensitive to the needs of the children in your classroom who don’t have a biological mom in their life.

The kids in your children’s ministry might feel uncomfortable or have a hard time during these lessons.

You’re more than welcome to use these stand-alone Mother’s Day lesson plans to teach children about the mother figures God blesses them with such as grandmothers, aunts, foster moms, and other female role models at church and in their community.

They can have a special relationship with these women, and that relationship is worth celebrating on Mother’s Day too!

Let’s dive into God’s word and learn some important lessons about our moms!

Lesson 1: God’s Special Creation – Mom

Learning Objective: Teach children that God created mothers and they are a special gift from Him.

Ideal Age Group: Ages 4-8

Bible Story/Passage: “Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” – Proverbs 31:28

Lesson Plan: Begin by asking the children what they know about Mother’s Day. Explain that it is a special day to celebrate our moms and show them love.

Read the Bible passage together and talk about how mothers are a gift from God. Ask the children to share why they think their moms are special.

Do the interactive activity together. You should be able to get materials from your church’s library, mainly blank paper and crayons.

Interactive Activity: Have the kids draw a picture, or make a Mother’s Day card, of their mother doing something they love. Encourage them to share with the class what makes their mom special and why they love her.

Prayer: “Dear God, thank you for creating mothers. They are such a special gift from you. Help us to show our moms how much we love and appreciate them. Amen.”

Lesson 2: Love Like Jesus – Biblical Moms

Learning Objective: Teach children the importance of showing love and appreciation to their moms, using biblical examples.

Ideal Age Group: Ages 6-10

Bible Story/Passage: Ruth and Naomi – Book of Ruth

Lesson Plan: The first great commandment is to love the Lord, and the second is to love our fellowman.

Begin by asking the children if they have ever heard of Ruth and Naomi (Ruth is the great-grandmother to King David and became one of the women listed in Jesus’ family tree). Use the story to teach them about the love between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law.

Discuss how Ruth showed her love for Naomi by staying with her and taking care of her, even when it was difficult. Ask the children to share ways they can show love and appreciation to their own mothers, even in hard times.

Do the interactive activity together. You can use materials like construction paper and markers to create a banner with “Mother’s Love” written on it.

Interactive Activity: Have the children make a banner with the words “Mom’s Love” on it. Encourage them to write or draw ways they can show love like Ruth did.

Closing Prayer: “Dear God, thank you for the story of Ruth and Naomi. Help us to love like Ruth did, by showing love and appreciation to our moms every day. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Lesson 3: Women Of The Bible

This would make an amazing youth group lesson. You can even create small group discussion questions to ask.

Learning Objective: Teach children about some of the amazing women in the Bible and how they can learn from their stories.

Ideal Age Group: Ages 8-12

Bible Story/Passage: Book of Esther, Proverbs 31

Lesson Plan: Begin by introducing the children to Esther, a courageous queen who risked her life to save her people. Discuss how she used her influence and position for good.

Then, read Proverbs 31 and talk about what it means to be a virtuous woman. Ask the children to share qualities they admire in the women mentioned in the passage.

Do an interactive activity together, such as creating a collage of virtuous women using magazine clippings or drawing pictures of these women.

Encourage the children to think about how they can apply these lessons to their own lives and be courageous and virtuous in their actions.

Interactive Activity: Have the children create a collage or draw pictures of virtuous women from the Bible, such as Ruth, Esther, Mary, and Deborah.

Closing Prayer: Dear God, thank you for the amazing women in the Bible who inspire us to be courageous and virtuous. Help us to learn from their stories and strive to live like them in our own lives. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Lesson 4: Mother’s Are Gifts From A Loving God

Learning Objective: Teach your child about a mother’s role and how they reflect God’s love for us.

Ideal Age Group: Ages 4-8

Bible Story/Passage: Proverbs 31:28, Luke 1:46-49

Lesson Plan: The whole point of this lesson is to share ways a child’s mother is a gift from God. You can start by reading Proverbs 31:28 and discussing how mothers are a precious blessing from God. Talk about the characteristics of a godly mother mentioned in the passage.

Then, read Luke 1:46-49 and discuss how Mary’s song praises God for choosing her to be the mother of Jesus. Ask your child what they think makes mothers so special.

Do an activity together, such as making homemade cards or crafts for their mother, grandmother, or other mother figures in their life. Encourage them to write or draw what they appreciate about these women.

End the lesson by saying a prayer of thanksgiving for mothers and their loving role in our lives. Remind your child that God loves us just like a mother loves her children, and we should always be grateful for this amazing gift from Him.

Interactive Activity: Use these Happy Mother’s Day coloring pages to continue the lesson and have your child color them while discussing different ways they can show love and appreciation for their mother.

Closing Prayer: Dear God, thank you for the gift of mothers in our lives. We are grateful for their love, care, and guidance. Help us to always honor and appreciate them just as Jesus honored his mother Mary. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Lesson 5: Sacrifice & Treasure of a Mother

Learning Objective: Help your kids understand the value of a mother’s sacrifice and how to treasure their mother.

Ideal Age Group: Ages 5-9

Bible Story/Passage: Genesis 3:20, Mark 14:3-9

Lesson Plan: Break the kids up into small groups to discuss the Bible story and passage. Encourage them to share their thoughts on how a mother’s sacrifice is like Mary’s pouring out of expensive perfume on Jesus’ feet and Eve’s sacrifice to be the mother of all living.

Take some time to write down or draw things that your mother has sacrificed for you and how much you treasure her. Share with the group and have each child present their list or drawing.

If you’re teaching younger children, you can create a scavenger hunt where they have to find different objects that represent a mother’s sacrifice (e.g. a picture of a baby, a piece of clothing representing the sacrifices of laundry and cleaning, etc.) and talk about how these things show love and dedication.

Closing Prayer: Dear God, thank you for showing us the sacrificial love of mothers through your word. Help us to remember and appreciate the sacrifices our mothers make for us every day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
