I nearly had a heart attack in the middle of the grocery store when my husband first moved our family to the Southern States.

Milk was nearly $4 for a gallon and we recently left our home where we were paying $1.88 for a gallon.

Talk about a shocker!

With a fairly big family, we do everything we can to save money on our grocery bill. We make simple dinners for us and the children, save money (even when it feels like there’s nothing to save) and focus on our financial end goals so we don’t overspend (or spend at all).

Knowing the cost of groceries will only increase over time, I want to share with you 5 ways your family can save thousands on your grocery bill each year. These are the same frugal tips my family and I use each year as well.

Mind-Blowing Ways To Save Thousands On Your Grocery Bill

Start A Neighborhood Food Coop

For all the produce you buy at the grocery store, have you thought about growing a garden and spending a few minutes each day maintaining your own produce?

The best part is you don’t need expert knowledge or know-how. There are farm and gardening stores in your area that offers basic gardening 101 classes you can take.

If you don’t have a yard where you can plant a couple of heads of lettuce, summer squash, strawberries, and other favorite produce, don’t throw in the towel just yet.

My husband and I are used to apartment living (especially during his college days for many years). There are so many plants and herbs you can grow inside your home.

The best part is getting together with others in your neighborhood and doing a food coop together. This means each family grows something specific and then you all come together and share what you have with each other.

If organized well, this can be a very successful way to save thousands on your grocery budget each year.

Canning Essentials and Preserve Your Food for Winter

One of the questions I’m asked a lot is how to save money on your produce during the winter months?

If you grow your garden with a year in mind (instead of three months), you’ll be able to easily can and preserve your food to enjoy.

Canning isn’t difficult and can actually be a really fun family experience. This is something our family enjoys doing every year because of the laughter and crazy memories we make.

Something else we do is watch our locally owned grocery store and the prices of their produce.

I remember one summer our local grocery store had a shipment of strawberries from the farms nearby and there was too many to sell in such a short time.

So the store sold each plastic container of strawberries (normally $5), for $1 each! Needless to say, this route of buying and canning the strawberries was more cost effective than growing them ourselves that year.

Buy and Cook With What’s On Sale

There was a time in our life where we wondered how we were going to be able to afford groceries each week. I know the stress and pain this causes.

One of the best ways our family found to help save money and still eat nutritiously during these times was to cook meals based on the store’s sales.

This usually means a little creativity on your part, but as you involve your family (you don’t have to do this alone), you’ll start enjoying the creative process of coming up with new ideas for your dinners.

We also took advantage of earning money on the groceries we were buying using the iBotta app. If you haven’t signed up, you can earn $5 right now and the best part is they pay you to upload a grocery receipt (even if you didn’t cash out on any rebates).

Don’t Be Brand Loyal

As a kid, my husband remembers the Oreo’s cereal and has been so excited to see this food come back.

Well, an off-brand came out (costing less) and my husband decided to do a taste test. He couldn’t’ tell the difference between the Oreo’s cereal and the off-brand cereal.

As much as we’d like to buy name brand foods, you can’t afford to be brand loyal when you’re trying to save money.

The mark-ups are incredibly high and can make a difference of thousands of dollars saved each year.

If you want to run a little experiment, the next time you go grocery shopping, keep a list of the name-brand prices of the off-brand food you’re buying and compare the two.

I think you’ll be surprised at how much money you’re already saving by buying off-brand.

Cook Simply Without Losing Nutrients

Just because you’re saving money on your grocery bill and trying to live frugally doesn’t mean you have to lose in other ways.

You can cook simple meals without losing nutrients your body and family needs.

Some ideas for meals include oatmeal, peanut butter balls, stir-fry (veggies from your garden), and so much more.

As you look for ways to save thousands on your grocery bill each year using these tips and thinking of your own, you’ll be able to maintain a frugal lifestyle that will pay dividends into the future.

Remember, some of the ways you can save money on your grocery bill each year is to grow a garden or start a neighborhood food coop, can your produce, plan your meals with what’s currently on sale, not be brand loyal, and to cook simple meals for your family.

  1. I love the idea of growing your own produce to save money. I’ve actually been thinking about how I could successfully grown some produce in my apartment. I’ve settled on a few herbs, but now the challenge is how I’ll keep my toddler away from them. I’m sure once I plant them he’ll be itching to play and dig in the dirt.

    1. Toddlers are helpful like that, aren’t they? 😉 Maybe you can have your little one help with a pot of tomatoes or another small veggie so they feel like they’re helping. I know mine love to make messes, but love to help in their own ways even more. Have a great day, Terri.
