As a kid, I remember going trick-or-treating with my siblings and we would circle our block, and the next one, and about five blocks later we’d finally make our way home with pillowcases full of chocolate bars.
Then, one year, my parent’s told us we were going to do something “new” for Halloween.
And as a kid, “new” was another word for “forceful non-negotiable decision making” from parents.
Instead, my family and I went to our first trunk-or-treat at our local church and the event wasn’t as disastrous as my 7-year-old mind thought.
It seemed that every year we went back the trunk decorations became more elaborate, the cars multiplied, and more community members came out to support this activity.
What do you do at a trunk-or-treat?
A Trunk or Treat is a Halloween activity, usually hosted at a church or at another community location where people park their cars in a large parking lot. They open and decorate the back of their vehicle in order to hand out candy to children. Often the trunks are decorated with a theme, such as spooky, superheroes, Disney, or another childhood favorite theme.
Do kids dress up for trunk or treat?
Kids are often encouraged to dress up but are not required to. Trunk or treat is another way for children to collect candy on Halloween. Instead of going from door-to-door where they don’t know the homeowners, they go from vehicle to vehicle in an often safe location.
What time is trunk or treat?
The time for trunk or treating varies with the community or organization hosting the event. Often, people are asked to decorate and set up their cars around 4 p.m. so children can start the trunk or treat around 5 p.m. The activity is usually scheduled for the evening between the hours of 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Always check with your local community or church to confirm times.
How does trunk or treat work?
A trunk or treat is a growing popular method for kids to safely collect candy on Halloween. Parents will bring their children to their church or another community event where people will have their trunks open and hand out candy. Children are encouraged to follow the path of cars to collect their Halloween candy.
How do you organize the candy?
There are many easy and creative ways you can organize your candy for a trunk or treat. The easiest way is to keep your candy in the bag and hand to children as they come to your trunk. A creative way would be to place the candy in a big bowl and make the candy part of your trunk’s theme and display.
